Sportiva Events - Torbay Triathlon 2019

Hope everyone had a great easter holiday enjoying the fantastic sunshine! It was absolutely beaming down in sunny Devon all weekend and luckily enough there wasn’t a rain cloud in sight as I ventured to Torbay Velopark and the adjacent Leisure Centre on Easter Sunday to photograph the 2019 Torbay Triathlon held by Sportiva Events.

I always arrive at events early to scope out the venue and look for some great spots to capture the athletes so some forward planning is always required. After a good walk round several times, checking out the routes and times of the races I had a plan.

As the competitors started turning up for registration I took the opportunity to get some candid shots of their preparation. I like these shots. They add to the build up and anticipation without the need to stage anything artificial. After a walk around the transition area I took myself up the swimming pool where the first discipline took place. Lighting in a pool isn’t great but at least its constant and with the challenges of humidity, again, I got there early to allow my kit to acclimatise and planned my positioning and the type of shots I wanted.

I was luckily enough to have some assistance with me for this event and Nik was a massive help. He shot all the competitors over the finish line and photographed the cycling element due to the size of the event. Once I got the shots I needed in the pool and raced over to the open fields where I photographed the running element. I did this several times over the day as different classes set off to try and capture as many athletes as possible. Its always nice, as a participant, to look back and see images of yourself taking part so I try to make this possible for everyone.

After a full day shooting it was then back home to start the process of looking through 2000+ images for editing and within 24-48 hours my client had a full portfolio of images to use.

Thanks for reading
